Plan for Self Care Week 2020

Clinical commissioning groups are being urged to start planning for this year’s Self Care Week (16 -22 November) which has the theme “Live Self Care for Life”.

The national event can be used to promote a range of self care messages and to tailor activities to meet local needs. It can also be used to collaborate with local agencies, increasing the reach and ensuring consistency of your self care communications.

Sandwell and Birmingham CCG, winners of last year’s Self Care Week Outstanding CCG Award, (a joint award by the Self Care Forum and NHS Clinical Commissioners) worked with a series of partners including their 84 GP surgeries.  In addition to increasing local people’s ability to self care, as part of its Self Care Week activity, the CCG decreased GP appointments by 1,925 and made savings of around £300,000 in prescribing costs.

The Week can also be used to reignite self care practice for the expected second wave of the coronavirus since the public may need support and encouragement at this time to protect themselves and others against the virus. In addition to social distancing and handwashing, further suggestions for COVID19 self care messages are:

  • taking vitamin D supplements, particularly important for those shielding and unable to go outside;
  • good nutrition and regular exercise to support general wellbeing and help maximize people’s immunity;
  • adopting positive lifestyle choices;
  • supporting mental wellness by keeping connected, ensuring a sense of perspective, and taking further steps to maintain health.
