On 2 November 2017 we held our 5th annual national members event Making strategic commissioning work attended by CCG leaders from across the country and hosted by our co-chairs Dr Graham Jackson and Dr Amanda Doyle.
There was a packed agenda, based around strategic commissioning, following on from our recent publication on this theme. Delegates heard from top CCG representatives, and high-profile speakers from across the system including Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt and NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens.
Presentations from the day are now available for NHSCC members in the members only area of our website.
Strategic commissioning was the theme of the day
Following this, our first panel of the day was on understanding strategic commissioning.
Delegates heard presentations from Claire Fuller, Nigel Edwards, Chief Executive, Nuffield Trust; Dr Nina Pearson, Chair Luton CCG, and STP Clinical Lead Bedfordshire, Luton & Milton Keynes STP; Dr Claire Fuller, STP lead, Surrey Heartlands; and Saffron Cordery, Director of Policy and Strategy, NHS Providers.
The next session looked at strategic commissioning in practice with lessons so far from the
emerging accountable care systems. Michael Macdonnell, national director of health system transformation, NHS England presented first. Delegates then heard about work taking place in West Berkshire from Cathy Winfield, the area’s ACS lead; Buckinghamshire from Dr Karen West, of Aylesbury Vale CCG and Chiltern CCG and Dr Martin Thornton, GP and lead for Buckinghamshire GP Federation; and Blackpool and Fylde Coast from Andrew Harrison, Blackpool and Fylde Coast ACS.
Networking and sharing challenges
Following this it was time for lunch, which gave delegates time to network and meet with the wide range of exhibitors that were at the event.
After lunch, our chief executive Julie Wood led a session, looking at how things were feeling on the ground for CCG leaders. While it was clear that many challenges remain, encouragingly it seems delegates were feeling more positive than when we ran a similar survey at last year’s event.
Breakout sessions around the changing commissioning landscape
Delegates had the opportunity to choose to attend a breakout sessions led by our member networks on:
Panel session on ensuring delivery of value
The final panel session, explored the opportunities for strategic commissioning to deliver value for patients and the wider health and care system. Chaired by our chief executive Julie Wood, delegates heard from Niall Dickson, Chief Executive, NHS Confederation and two of our board members Dr Gora Bangi, Clinical Chair, NHS Chorley and South Ribble CCG and Tracey Cox, Accountable Officer, NHS Bath and Northeast Somerset CCG.
Q&A with Simon Stevens
The final speaker of the day was Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England. He took questions from delegates via Slido and from the floor in a lively session that wrapped up an interesting, inspiring day.
