NHS Clinical Commissioners responds to Simon Stevens’ announcement on long Covid funding

Dr Graham JacksonResponding to £10m of additional funding to help support people with ‘long Covid’, announced today by Sir Simon Stevens at the NHS Providers annual conference, Dr Graham Jackson, chair of NHS Clinical Commissioners said:

“We welcome Sir Simon’s announcement today of extra support for people with long Covid symptoms and the additional £10 million funding to clinical commissioners across the country to support much needed new services.

“Long Covid symptoms are thought to last for several weeks or months, and can include fatigue, breathlessness and other physical and psychological issues. Clinical commissioners play a vital role in planning services for these patients and clinicians are already seeing people who are clearly struggling with a range of ongoing health problems that are delaying their recovery, so additional public information on the Your Covid Recovery website is also very welcome.

“It is essential that our clinicians also have the right tools to help long Covid patients and we welcome the additional clarity that NICE guidance will bring.

“It is too early to know how many people are going to need some form of ongoing treatment or support, and whilst we have estimates, we know that this is another challenge to local health and community services as we deal with a second Covid-19 wave and also head into Winter with its usual demands.”
