Response to Department of Health consultation on prescribing gluten-free foods

We have responded to the Department of Health’s consultation on the availability of gluten free foods on prescription in primary care.

In our response we are clear that we do not believe gluten free foods should be available on prescription in primary care, reflecting the views of the majority of our members.

This is due to a number of reasons including:

  • the increased availability of the products themselves,
  • the need to prioritise spending in order to live within the NHS budget,
  • the excess cost of the items;
  • and the possibility of utilising alternatives to gluten containing products.

Our response includes a number of specific examples from members as well as outcomes from engagement already undertaken prior to the introduction of local restrictions.
