Learning from the vanguards

The vanguard programme has been an important milestone on the journey to transform the way people access their local health and care services, and to ensure these services meet the needs of future generations.

The vanguard sites have led the way in delivering this change in line with the ambitions set out in the Five year forward view. There is now an opportunity for other health and care leaders to learn from and build on this work.

NHS Providers, the NHS Confederation, the Local Government Association and NHS Clinical Commissioners have led a programme of work to help share learning from the vanguards with the rest of the health and care system. We have compiled a series of briefings, reports, case studies, podcasts and blogs which consider the key achievements and legacy of the vanguards. .

This joint work explores the lessons we can learn from the vanguards in relation to:

  • Supporting people and communities to stay well
  • Staff at the heart of new care models
  • Spreading and scaling up change
  • Improving the experiences of people who use services
  • Harnessing technology
  • The journey to integrated care

We hope that these materials will be a valuable resource for those who are working with partners in their local areas to redesign care to deliver transformational and lasting change.
